Research Area: Secure Home Computing
Cross Cutting Thrusts: Usable Privacy and Security
Scope: The home is going digital. Home computing environments are already quite sophisticated and growing more so very rapidly. The central goal of this project is to design basic security principles and mechanisms to build a trustworthy and easy-to-use digital home storage environment that will be secure even for non-expert users.
Outcomes: (1) Tools and techniques that can significantly simplify the use of access control in the digital home. (2) Increased understanding of user behavior and access-control needs in the emerging home storage environment. (3) Enhanced education at CMU and elsewhere, as the new insights are embedded into storage systems, distributed systems, and computer security classes taught by the PIs. (4) The PIs intend to release the prototype system developed in this work (for use in the user studies and test deployments) as free software, for others to use for research, class projects, and perhaps their own deployments.
