Abstract

Integrated Vehicle-Network-Vision System for Transit Security

Terrorist attacks on transit systems have increased worldwide during the past decade. The project is to develop a prototype of the integrated vehicle-network-vision system for transit security. The system includes automatic people mover vehicles, ad-hoc wireless networks, software for video compression and streaming, software for automatic event detection, such as face detection and unattended bag detection. The first prototype was tested at the Test Track of Bombardier Transportation in West Miflin, PA, in June, 2005. The system successfully transmitted live videos from four cameras from a moving train at 20 miles per hour for about 300 meters. The preliminary event detection algorithms have been developed for face detection and unattended bag highlighting from the videos in a people mover vehicle.
