Talk Title:Current topics and research activities at Darmstadt IT-security research cluster
Speaker:Dr. Michael Waidner, Chair Professor for Security in IT, Technische Universität Darmstadt
Time & Location:12:00pm - 1:30pm
CIC Building, Pittsburgh

Abstract

Dr. Waidner will present current challenges in the fields of Cryptography, Cloud Security, Cyber-physical System Security, Identity and Privacy, and, Secure Software Engineering. Some preliminary results at Darmstadt's research institutions are already under way, such as:

  • Privacy-Preserving Cryptographic Protocols (“TASTY” - Tool for Automating Secure Two-Party Computations)
  • Cloud Gateways (“OmniCloud” - Secure data backups in multiple storage clouds)
  • Virtual Security Domains (“BizzTrust” for Android: Bring Your Own Device)
  • Personal Information Sharing Advisor and Dash Board (“privacy dashboard”)
  • Security mechanisms in software engineering (“Clara”: CompiLe-time Approximation of Runtime Analyses)

Speaker Bio

Michael Waidner is the director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology (Fraunhofer SIT) and Chair Professor for Security in IT at the Technische Universität Darmstadt. He is member of the steering committee of the House of IT and he is also responsible for two IT security competency centers located in Darmstadt: for the Center for Advanced Security Research Darmstadt (CASED), which is funded by the state of Hesse, and for the European Center for Security and Privacy by Design (EC SPRIDE), which is funded by the BMBF. All in all more than 250 scientists (thereof 15 Professors and 24 PostDocs) are researching in Darmstadt in disciplines that contribute to the development of new IT security solutions.

Before 2010 Michael Waidner was an IBM Distinguished Engineer and the Chief Technology Officer for Security, responsible for the technical security strategy and architecture of the IBM Corporation.  Michael Waidner authored more than 130 scientific publications and is inventor of more than 20 patents. He is an IEEE Fellow and an ACM Distinguished Scientist.
